Why should we use reusable nappies?

13 September 2016

One of the things we talk about a lot as Turtle Tots teachers is poo! (As new parents I know you can relate to this – who ever thought such a subject could be so fascinating?)

All our babies and toddlers use the double nappy system to avoid any little ‘accidents’ sneaking out into the water. This system, an under-nappy covered by a well-fitting neoprene swim nappy, gives everyone peace of mind until children are fully toilet trained - no one wants to be the one whose baby has done their business in the pool as it has a huge knock on effect for everyone, with cancelled classes and pool cleaning costs to take into account.

Unfortunately this system, whilst effective, creates a huge amount of unnecessary waste as the vast majority of parents still use the disposable under-nappies, which are thrown away after each use.

Unnecessary is the key word here, as unlike ordinary disposable nappies, which also create waste, disposable swim nappies are almost always thrown away clean. When I say clean I mean no poo! If (when) babies wee in the pool it just goes straight out of the nappy into the water, as they are not designed to hold liquid. So yes, there is always baby wee in the water in any pool you ever swim in, but the pool chemicals and filtration systems are designed to handle this, so nothing to worry about!

The cost of using disposable nappies also adds up over the 3 or 4 years it takes before children are reliably toilet trained and can stop using them. On average a packet of 12 swim nappies costs around £5, so each nappy costs around 40p. Multiply that by that by 40 for the number of weeks our Turtle Tots classes run each year and you have £16 per year, totaling £48 over 3 years or £64 over 4 years, depending on how quickly little ones are fully toilet trained. Of course this only counts the nappies used at our classes, if you add up all the other times families go swimming together the cost is much higher.

Reusable swim nappies are the cost-effective, convenient and environmentally friendly solution and we have designed this gorgeous Turtle Tots swim nappy to fit underneath our outer neoprene nappy.

Adjustable to fit so that you only ever need to buy one – the nappy will fit babies from 3-4 months old right up to when they stop needing to wear it. A one-off payment of £10 ensures you always have a nappy when you need one, no more realising you have run out of disposables and having to dash out to the supermarket just before your Turtle Tots class.

All that is needed after swimming is a quick rinse in cold water to get rid of the chlorine, then the reusable nappy can be dried and packed away ready for next week (obviously if there is any poo then the nappy needs proper washing in the machine but this doesn’t actually happen very often).

If the majority of Turtle Tots customers swapped to the reusable nappy we would collectively save an enormous amount of waste going to landfill. We all know that we should be doing more to reduce our environmental impact; this is the type of small change that can make a big difference.
