Baby swimming at 3 months: Is your little one ready?
Three months in, you and your baby are already on quite the journey together! If you’re thinking about making baby swimming one of your next adventures, it might help to know that it’s safe for them to start any time from birth.
When it comes to starting baby swimming lessons, it’s not about waiting for them to hit a particular set of milestones that indicate they’re ‘ready’. Rather, it’s about choosing a class that’s designed to support your baby as they explore the water and start building their confidence and skills in a way that’s tailored to perfectly match their age and stage.
In short, it’s not about the right time, but the right class.
This guide explains what you should consider if you want to take your 3-month-old swimming. We’ll also cover what our swimming lessons for this age group look like, how our classes support babies in these early months, safety essentials, and how to build water familiarity at home so the pool feels like a natural next step.
When to start baby swimming
Unless your baby was born prematurely, and as long as they are healthy, you can start taking your baby swimming from the moment they’re born. You don’t need to wait for them to be fully vaccinated, and they don’t need to have mastered head control – or in fact, any specific skills – before they can start exploring the water.
If your baby was born prematurely, it’s still often possible to swim early, but always check with your GP, health visitor or neonatal team first so you feel confident you’re starting at the right time for your baby.
What to expect in your 3-month-old’s swimming lessons
Here at Turtle Tots, we offer a structured swimming programme for ages from newborn up to five years. Each of our swimming levels is designed to perfectly match the needs and abilities of the different age groups, always with a gentle, child-centred approach. The programme naturally progresses as your child grows in both age and confidence, so they gradually build the skills they need to be safe in the water and develop a lifelong love of swimming.
‘Turtle’ is our swimming level for babies aged 0–8 months, and it’s designed to help you and your baby feel relaxed and comfortable in the water together, building trust and connection through calm, positive experiences.
Here’s what you can expect if you bring your three-month-old along to our Turtle classes:
- Your baby will be fully supported at all times – At three months, your baby doesn’t need to do anything independently in the water. Our classes are built around gentle, supportive holds so your little one feels safe, secure and comfortable from your very first session. Our friendly, highly qualified teachers will give you clear guidance on how to hold and move with your baby in the water, including positions that support their head, neck and body. The aim at this stage is to help you and your baby learn how to swim and float together.
- The activities will be age- and stage-appropriate – Our focus is not on pushing skills, but on helping your little one feel relaxed in the pool while laying early foundations, including water safety, in a gentle and appropriate way. Songs, games and predictable routines are often used because they help your baby recognise what’s coming next. Over time, those familiar patterns turn the pool into a happy, familiar place where they feel safe and confident.
- The pace will always be child-led – Our baby swimming classes are rooted in communication, giving you the flexibility to follow your baby’s cues. At three months, babies communicate through body language and non-verbal signals, so the pace of the class responds to what your baby is showing you. There’s plenty of time to repeat activities your baby is enjoying, helping to build familiarity and positive associations with the water. If your baby seems unsure, your teacher will help you soften the approach, adapt the activity, or pause for a cuddle and a reset. Most of our baby-swimming programme takes place above the water. Our lessons do include natural submersion experiences, but they are introduced very gently and only when your baby is comfortable.
Why familiarity matters (and how to build it at home)
One of the best ways to make baby swimming at 3 months a positive experience for you both is to build water familiarity at home first.
Water is a natural environment for babies, but the sights, sounds and sensations of water experiences outside of the womb can be new and surprising to them.
There are lots of gentle techniques you can use as part of your bath times that can help your baby transition to the pool:
- Calm splashing and trickles – Be sure to focus on your baby’s shoulders, arms and tummy first. If your baby is relaxed, build up the intensity of the splashes gradually, and start to include their head and face when they’re ready.
- Introduce simple songs – At Turtle Tots, we use songs and games in our lessons because they create familiarity through repetition. Singing familiar songs at bathtime can help your baby feel relaxed in the water.
- Practise comfortable position changes – In swimming lessons, you’ll learn supportive holds. Getting your baby used to being moved between different positions in the water can help them feel more comfortable with it in the pool.
Safety considerations for baby swimming at three months
Choosing the right class matters, but so do the practical safety basics. Here are a few key things to look out for when swimming with a three-month-old:
- Nappy hygiene – Most pools and swim schools have a strict double-nappy rule for babies and children who aren’t fully toilet trained. This means wearing a swim nappy plus a snug neoprene nappy over the top, to avoid any leaks and keep the water safe and hygienic for everyone – check out our blog for more information.
- Teacher training and safeguarding – Believe it or not, swimming is an unregulated activity in the UK, which means anyone can offer lessons without the right qualifications or experience. We strongly recommend choosing a swim school with highly trained teachers, clear safeguarding practices, and a programme designed specifically for babies.
At Turtle Tots, we work closely with the internationally recognised Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) to ensure every teacher is trained to the highest standards. Our teachers hold STA qualifications, including the Swimming Teachers Award, Baby and Preschool Award and a lifesaving qualification, plus valid DBS certification and safeguarding training.
Beyond qualifications, Turtle Tots teachers complete our own rigorous training programme covering babies’ developmental stages, pre-verbal communication, early brain development and early attachment. And just as importantly, our teachers bring warmth, empathy and reassurance to those first sessions, adapting to you and your baby’s needs at every stage.

Starting now vs waiting a little longer
There’s really no right or wrong time to start baby swimming lessons, only the right time for your family.
As long as you choose a class designed specifically for three-month-olds, this can be a really lovely time to start building water familiarity and confidence together, with plenty of support in place from the start.
And if now isn’t the right time, that’s okay too. Maybe routines are still settling, you’re struggling to fit lessons into your schedule, or getting out of the house still feels like a lot.
Whenever you’re ready, the Turtle Tots programme will be here to welcome you, with child-led, age-appropriate lessons to help your little one thrive in the water.
Still have some questions about swimming with your 3 month old?
Here are the answers to the questions we get asked most often but if you are looking for more advice, please contact your local office and speak to our friendly team who will be more than happy to help.
Q. Can my 3-month-old hold their head up enough for swimming lessons?
Yes, as long as you choose a class designed for babies this age. At three months, head and neck control is still developing, so your baby should be fully supported with age- and stage-appropriate holds throughout the lesson. That’s exactly how Turtle Tots baby lessons are structured.
Q. What specific skills should my 3-month-old have before starting swimming?
None! At this age, it’s not about skills. It’s about joining a class that’s designed for your baby’s stage, with plenty of physical support, warm water, and a child-led pace guided by your baby’s cues.
Q. Will my 3-month-old remember swimming skills between weekly lessons?
Not consciously, but repetition is how babies learn. Familiar songs and supported holds help your baby feel secure, and over time those repeated experiences lay the foundations for growing confidence and early water skills.
Q. What flotation support is used for 3-month-old babies?
At three months, your baby isn’t expected to float independently. Instead, your arms provide the support, using the safe, gentle holds you’re shown in class. That means your baby stays secure and comfortable while you move through the water together, building familiarity and confidence week by week.
Q. How do 3-month-old classes differ from 6-month-old classes?
At Turtle Tots, our lessons for three-month-olds are focused on the early foundations: comfort, support, and getting to know your baby’s cues in the water. The focus is on helping your baby feel relaxed and comfortable in the pool, building trust and connection, and learning gentle, supportive holds. It’s also where essential water safety foundations are introduced in a calm, age-appropriate way, and you learn how to swim and float together as a pair.
By around 6 months, many babies are ready for a slightly faster pace and a more playful, challenge-based style of lesson. There’s more laughter, toys and active movement, with activities that let your baby show off their developing strength, coordination and balance. Your little one will also start learning how to splash into the water all by themselves, practise key water safety skills, and progress towards short underwater swims when they’re ready.
Q. Should I wait until 4 months, when my baby might be stronger?
You don’t need to wait for strength – or any developmental milestones – to start your baby’s swimming lessons. Turtle Tots lessons begin from birth, and our early programme is designed with full support built in. If starting now works for your family, baby swimming at 3 months can be a lovely time to begin. If life feels full-on, it’s also fine to wait.
