Splashing through the Generations: Why Every Grandparent Should Take Their Grandchild Swimming
When we think of baby swimming lessons, we often picture a mum or dad in the pool with their little ones. But at Turtle Tots, we’ve noticed a wonderful trend: more and more grandparents are the ones taking the plunge with their grandchildren – and we love it as much as they do!
Whether it’s because parents are back at work or simply because Nana and Grandad want their own special “thing” with the new addition to the family, grandparents are becoming a huge part of our Turtle Tots community.
If you’re a grandparent considering joining us in the pool, or a parent thinking of gifting a term to your own parents, here is why those 30 minutes in the water are so magical for everyone involved.
Bonding in a Distraction-Free Zone
In today’s world, it’s rare to get completely uninterrupted time. No phones, no doorbells, no laundry to fold. When a grandparent is in the pool with their grandchild, it’s pure, focused connection. The skin-to-skin contact and the need for the baby to rely on their “grown-up” for support build a deep level of trust and a unique bond that is different from anything else they do together.
A Chance to “Un-Parent”
Many grandparents tell us that they find swimming lessons a joyful way to play without the pressures of “parenting”. At Turtle Tots, our lessons are child-centred and fun-focused. We use songs, games, and gentle splashes to teach vital skills. For grandparents, it’s an opportunity to be the one who provides the fun, the giggles, and the cuddles in the warm water, leaving the “admin” of parenting back on dry land.
Staying Active Together
Swimming isn’t just great for the little ones; it’s a brilliant, low-impact way for grandparents to stay active. Moving around in the pool, lifting and swishing a baby through the water, is a gentle but effective workout for joints and muscles. It’s a win-win: the baby develops their motor skills and coordination, while Nana or Grandad keeps their own fitness ticking over in a supportive, warm environment.
Passing on Vital Life Skills
There is a huge sense of pride in watching a grandchild learn to swim. Knowing that you are the one helping them learn to blow bubbles, kick their legs, and eventually become water-safe is incredibly rewarding. Grandparents often have a calm, patient energy that works beautifully in our classes, helping little ones feel secure as they explore new skills at their own pace.
Making New Friends
Our classes aren’t just for the babies – they’re for the grown-ups too! We see many grandparents forming their own social circles at the poolside. Sharing the experience with other carers, chatting about their grandchild’s latest milestones, and perhaps grabbing a coffee together after class makes the weekly swimming trip a highlight of the social calendar.
Supporting the Modern Family
With many parents returning to work and childcare costs rising, grandparents are often the “secret weapon” that keeps a family running. By taking their grandchild to Turtle Tots, they are providing a huge practical help to parents while ensuring the child doesn’t miss out on the incredible developmental benefits of early-years swimming.
Why Nana Never Misses A Lesson
We love seeing generations come together in the water and we can talk about the benefits of multigenerational swimming all day. But don’t just take our word for it, Here, one of our proud grandma’s, Cathy B. from the Swindon area, shares how Turtle Tots became one of the most rewarding things she has done with her grandchild.
“My grandchildren — as with all grandparents — are simply the very best at everything they do. Every achievement feels remarkable and worthy of celebration.
Over the last three years, the time I have spent with my granddaughter learning to swim has been among the most rewarding experiences of my life. The Turtle Tots programme introduces water confidence in a slow and carefully measured way, perfectly suited to children of all confidence levels.
My granddaughter has never been bothered by splashing or going underwater, yet she has taken her time learning how to float. (Still a work in progress) Watching her grow in confidence at her own pace has been a joy.
The half hour we spend together each week in the water has built a wonderful bond of trust between us. It has created a deeply rewarding relationship, giving us precious space in our busy lives to enjoy uninterrupted time together — learning about one another and strengthening the special connection between grandparent and grandchild.
Along the way, we have made new “splash friends” whom we both look forward to seeing at our weekly lessons.
Although this will be our final year at Turtle Tots, as my granddaughter starts school in September, I know we will both treasure the memories we have made during our swimming lessons together.
A Warm Welcome Awaits
If you’re a grandparent and worried you’ve “been out of the pool for a while,” don’t be! Our teachers are experts at making everyone feel comfortable, regardless of their own swimming ability. Our pools are lovely and warm, our groups are small and friendly, and we move at a pace that suits both the baby and the grown-up.
So, Nana, Grandad—why not grab your swimsuit? We can’t wait to see you and your little Turtle in the pool.
