Top Tips for Keeping Warm this Winter!

Southampton
Brr, it may be a bit chilly outside but there is no reason to stop swimming just because it is Winter! One of the best things about swimming lessons is it’s available all year round!
However, we do know it can be cold when getting in and out of the pool so here are some top tips for keeping you and your little one warm this winter.
Before the Lesson
- Dress in Warm, Easy-to-Remove Layers:
- Use fleece-lined tracksuits, thermal tops, and warm socks. Choose clothes that are quick to remove so you don’t stay exposed for long when changing.
- Use a Robe or Changing Poncho:
- A fleece-lined or waterproof swim robe is great for keeping warm before you both enter the pool. Hooded options are especially helpful.
- Arrive Early:
- Arriving early ensures you have time to help adjust and get settled without rushing, which could make you feel cold.
- Wear a Swim Cap:
- A silicone swim cap retains more heat than fabric caps, keeping the head warm while in the water.
During the Lesson
- Full-Length Swimwear:
- Opt for a thermal or neoprene swimsuit to help keep their body insulated during the lesson. See our range here: https://www.turtletots.com/uk/shop/
- Keep Moving:
- Encourage your child to stay active in the pool to generate heat and prevent them from feeling the chill.
After the Lesson
- Dry Off Immediately:
- Dry off as soon as you and your child leave the water, focusing on the head, chest, and back first to retain warmth.
- Use a Warm, Absorbent Towel:
- A microfiber or hooded towel can dry you both quickly and keep you covered while changing.
- Dress Them in Warm, Layered Clothing:
- Post-swim, dress in thermal layers, warm socks, a woolly hat, and gloves. Ensure hair is dried thoroughly, using a hairdryer if available.
- Have a Warm Drink or Snack:
- A thermos with hot chocolate, warm milk, or soup will help you both warm up from the inside.
- Stand on a Mat:
- Place a dry mat or towel under your feet while drying and dressing to prevent heat loss from cold floors.
Bonus Tips
- Bring a Second Towel: Use one towel for drying off and another to wrap them up in after.
- Minimize Time in Wet Swimwear: Change them into dry clothes as quickly as possible to prevent shivering.
By following these steps, you and your child can stay warm and enjoy swimming lessons all year round 🙂
