Turtle Tots Trafford South & Haydock Case Study: Elijah’s Journey – Building Confidence, Communication & Strength Through Inclusive Swimming

At Turtle Tots Trafford South & Haydock, we believe every child deserves the chance to enjoy the water — safely, happily, and without barriers.

For Elijah, a young boy with autism, that opportunity has been truly life-changing.

🌊 Finding the right fit

Elijah’s family had found it difficult to access mainstream swimming lessons that could meet his level of need. When they discovered the Turtle Tots Trafford South & Haydock disability swimming sessions funded via Halton disabled children’s services, held on Sundays, they finally found a space designed around inclusion, patience, and progress at every child’s pace.

“We had been unable to access swimming lessons anywhere else due to his level of need, and so this has been invaluable for us.”

💬 Communication through connection

Each week, Elijah grows in confidence — not only in his swimming but also in his ability to communicate and connect. The calm, sensory-friendly sessions and supportive instructors have helped him engage, respond, and express joy in new ways.

“Each week he is enjoying himself and progressing. His confidence has grown so much in the water since starting.”

Through play, routine, and gentle encouragement, Elijah has developed stronger interactions and non-verbal communication — skills that carry over into everyday life.

🤝 Inclusion and belonging

Turtle Tots Trafford South & Haydock lessons are built on community. Every child is welcomed and supported to join in, make connections, and share their love of the water. For Elijah, being part of a group where he feels safe and accepted has made all the difference.

“It has been brilliant for meeting his sensory needs and he is always regulated in the pool.”

💪 Building physical strength

Swimming has also had a remarkable impact on Elijah’s physical development. The buoyancy of the water helps him move freely while building muscle tone and coordination. Over time, his family has noticed improvements in his core strength, balance, and fine and gross motor skills — all through an activity he loves.

“Swimming has been great for building this up.”

💚 A joyful transformation

“There have been many benefits for Elijah since he started swimming, but most importantly, he is happy when in the pool and looks forward to coming each week. I cannot rate the staff enough for their professionalism, patience, and care with all the children.”

At Turtle Tots Trafford South & Haydock, that’s what inclusion looks like: children learning, laughing, and thriving — each in their own way.
