Independent Swimming Starts Here

Our approach to swimming ensures that your child’s needs are expertly fulfilled and will nurture their confidence in the water. Building on the foundations that they have already acquired, your child will now be progressing to independent swimming on both their front and their back using paddle strokes.

Amongst many skills, they’ll be developing streamlining, rotation, diving to collect objects, treading water and floating. We maintain our strong focus on water safety and you may find your child coming swimming in their pyjamas in our themed water safety week! You will still accompany your child in the water to support their swimming journey as they still benefit hugely from your love and the sense of security that this gives them.

The shared fun of a swimming lesson with your pre-schooler is a wonderful bonding experience. Children who attend Turtle Tots lessons are usually happy, confident and safe little swimmers by the time they start school. We want them to learn to love swimming for life!

Benefits of swimming for 3 and 4 year olds

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you handle children who are nervous about parent-free lessons?

We always move at your child’s pace. Familiar routines, calm repetition and gentle encouragement help children build confidence without pressure. In Turtle Tots preschool lessons, you’ll remain in the water with your child throughout, but we gradually help them feel less dependent on your presence, so the transition to parent-free swimming lessons at age 5+  feels easier.

What makes preschool swimming different from earlier lessons?

At Turtle Tots, our preschool lessons focus on water confidence, stroke development and essential life-saving skills – all of which naturally lead to independent swimming. Throughout our programme, we always keep things playful and supportive, so your child’s swimming lessons are fun and something they look forward to!

When should I move my child from toddler to preschool swimming?

This usually happens between two-and-a-half and three,  but it’s about the right stage rather than a perfect age or moment. If your child is confident, coordinated and ready for a slightly more structured lesson, preschool classes are often the right next step.

How does swimming help with school readiness beyond water skills?

Attending swimming lessons regularly helps your child practise their listening skills, gently increase their attention span, build confidence, interact with other children and become familiar with routine – all super valuable skills that will translate positively into the classroom when the time comes for starting school.

What swimming skills will my 4-year-old learn before starting school?

Most children work on independent front and back swimming, floating, treading water, diving to collect objects, basic stroke development and water safety awareness. At Turtle Tots, we always adapt our activities to suit your child.

Will my preschooler be ready for parent-free swimming lessons?

Preschool lessons are designed to gently prepare children for this transition. Independence is gradually encouraged, with parents remaining in the water for reassurance and support.

How do preschool swimming lessons prepare children for big school? How do preschool swimming lessons prepare children for big school?

They help children practise listening to a teacher, following routines, moving independently and feeling confident in a group – all skills that support school swimming and classroom readiness.

Do I get in the pool with my child?

Yes, our lessons are designed for parents to accompany their child into the pool. Our pools are warm and comfortable and shallow enough to stand up in so parents do not need to be confident swimmers to join in. Our teachers are fully trained and experienced in helping parents and carers to feel confident in the water and will support both you and your child throughout the whole programme.

Why teach my preschooler to swim?

The Turtle Tots philosophy is to ensure safety and water confidence, encouraging parents to fully utilise the benefits and enjoyment that can have swimming with their children – whether that is at our lessons, on holiday or trips to the pool. We also provide a great social environment for parents and toddlers, giving them the opportunity to meet other families and children, forging friendships for life.

When will my child learn to swim on their own?

The age a child learns to swim independently depends on many factors including ability, confidence, and regularity of swimming.

Introducing children to Turtle Tots from an early age, and continue regular classes, means that by the age of 3 and a half many children will be swimming short distances independently.

Reviews

  • Turtle tots has taught both my children to be super confident in water. The classes are fun and varied, teaching the skills and techniques needed to be water confident and also learning the basic strokes through fun games and activities. The classes are small and delivered in lovely warm pools, perfect for little ones. I would definitely recommend turtle tots and will be sad to finish swimming with them now my children are older.

  • Turtle tots have been a great starting point to build Thomas’s confidence, they have been lots of fun we will miss going but it is time for him to move to classes without a parent. Thank you to Narelle and Laura for being a key part in building his confidence

  • We moved our three-year old son to Turtle Tots from another swim school where he refused to get in the water. Within a few minutes of session starting he was smiling, splashing and taking part eagerly and has been ever since thanks to their approach of allowing parents in the pool with them. He has come on leaps and bounds in his confidence since starting. We look forward to enrolling his younger siblings when they are old enough.

  • My daughter has absolutely loved her time at Turtle Tots. Starting from refusing to even enter the pool she has progressed really well to joining in with everything, being able to go at her own pace but lots of encouragement have really helped. She also loves all the songs! Whilst it is time for her to move to ‘big’ lessons without a parent in the pool we will definitely miss coming to Turtle Tots.

  • I have been taking my twins to Turtle Tots for 7 years. Their water confidence is amazing, and they understand the importance of swimming as a life skill. At the heart of Turtle Tots is water safety which is what attracted me to them but the knowledgeable and caring teachers make it a lovely environment to swim with.

  • My daughter has been attending turtle tots since she was 12 weeks old, the instructors fun way of teaching via nursery rhymes whilst learning the techniques to swim independently. My daughter’s confidence has grown so much, she is now 4 years old and swimming with very little aid. I’m my busy life it’s hard to make time to go to the pool for fun, these classes keep me committed to doing this. Thanks to Cathy and her team

  • We have been customers of Turtle Tots NI for almost 6 years now with our 3 children. It has been fanatic to watch them grow in confidence and develop such an important life skill, all while having fun. The lessons are child-centred and extremely engaging. Teachers Cathy, Christina and Sapphire are all very knowledgable and caring and put both the adults and children at ease in the water. Would highly recommend ⭐️

  • The Turtle Tots programme is very different to many baby swimming classes. All three of my children have loved their swimming classes with Turtle Tots. Many people see baby swimming as simply a splash about for fun and maybe some water confidence. But these classes are so so much more! We loved the child led ethos as this is so important to me and children learn faster and in a more sustainable way like this. All of my children have been able to swim independently much earlier than they otherwise would and my 8 year old is now a confident technique swimmer. She started when she was 10 weeks old. My just turned 3 year old is happy and confident in the pool which is great for our up coming holiday. He can swim small distances himself. My 5 year old is the most confident and for her age is well ahead of most others. I just love the fact the teachers do a diploma in baby and preschool teaching so if you are looking for quality classes for you and your wee one to enjoy look no further than Cathy and team!

  • We started turtle tots when my son was around 4months, he is almost 4years old now and loves he water. He gets so excited when it’s time for his swimming class with Cathy and loves to see his friends. Turtle Tots is the best swimming class you will find, looking forward to starting his little sister soon. Thank you to all the team

  • I take my granddaughter to Jen at The Marriott in Hale Barns. The pool itself is beautiful and always a great temperature which is a great start for little ones. Jen is very friendly and patient and has an excellent way with the children. My granddaughter is on her 2nd session of lessons with the 4 and unders, she is the oldest, and the majority are now swimming, one like a dolphin!, or starting to swim unaided and they all thoroughly enjoy their lessons. Highly recommended

  • My grandson began as a lockdown tot very afraid of the water but we joined Turtle Tots who were very patient and let him develop his own confidence. At age 4 he has taken the leap and is now swimming unaided and also confident under water . I would highly recommend Turtle Tots and their teaching methods .

  • I’ve been taking my little boy to Turtle Tots, Fylde since he was 9 weeks old, he is now 4.5 and we are just about to finish as he’s starting he school. I cannot recommend Vicky enough, she is amazing and so good with my son, he is confident in the water and has achieved his 5m badge plus all his turtle tots ones.
Every week the lessons are fun and engaging and he loves them! I will miss this precious time with him every week
Thank you Vicky and all at Sandpearl.
